CSX and recognizing the Mother of American Railroading

On November 1, 1980 Chessie System and Seaboard Coast Line merged to form the CSX Transportation. Much more than a merger to facilitate correction within the railroad industry, CSX introduced a new chapter of transportation that began when Baltimore businessmen met on February 27th, 1827 and chartered America’s First Railroad, the Baltimore & Ohio. True, history records several other railroad experiments in the US prior to that date, but they were mostly local enterprises position for one singular purpose, like moving coal from the mines to canal boats.  B&O was the only such venture designed for interstate commerce and the rapid popularity of rail technology literally drove our economy and added depth to the statement: America Grew Up On Trains. Some may say that is ancient history but we take the opposite view. Just stand trackside today and witness the size and thunder of the modern diesel locomotives that power CSX trains of today and note the impressive consists that carry automobiles, containers of all discerptions, coal and oil – all reminders of how much we depend on our railroads today. The CSX transportation machine did not happen singularly or overnight, but reflects the long steady progress from the Baltimore harbor side by way of the broad marketplace that came about by strategic mergers within the corporation of today as follows:

CSX Transportation

Chessie System

Seaboard Coastline

Pittsburgh & Lake Erie

Richmond Fredericksburg & Potomac

Split Conrail with NS in 1998 – CSX acquired mostly former New York Central)

Pam Am Railways Incorporated 1998 acquired June 1, 2022

Guilford Transportation Industries 1977

Boston & Maine

Maine Central

The pioneering spirit of the early B&O was continually tested, since they had to invent practically all of its early locomotive and car designs and track structures. The B&O did much experimentation that built the foundation to right of way standards. Out of recognition for that rich history and exceptional longevity, we celebrate the accomplishments of CSX and pay tribute to the pioneer Baltimore & Ohio with the current sale on track Beyond track our current inventory offers a great sampling of locomotives and complementary rolling stock and railroad-related items to choose from. Our competitive prices and award-winning rewards program offer motivation to incorporate some of that drama and history on your own model railroad empire. Happy Birthday #198 to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad!
